It Is Not Impossible That Papua Can Be Separated

The prolonged conflict in the provinces of Papua and West Papua deserves to be a serious conversation for this country. If it is considered merely a political discourse, or like a wild ball without direction, then it is not impossible that the State’s desire for Papua to remain a part of the Homeland will be in vain.

An interesting point to be taken seriously is why the western world, especially Melanesian pensioners and international human rights observers strongly pay attention to injustice in Papua, but within the Republic of Indonesia itself it is not considered as something very serious. It can be seen how foreign and social media abroad have never been bored campaigning for their intention towards Papua.

For the example , the number one person in this republic could be challenged by the Chairman of the Green Party of Australia Adam Bant who boldly showed the Morning Star pin (symbol of Papua flag) to Jokowi while he reminded Jokowi about his commitment to bring international human rights institutions involved in resolving the Papuan problem, if indeed there was human rights violations that occurred in Papua. This is a promise that was won during Jokowi’s campaign in the last election. The proof is that Indonesia restricted international human rights institutions when the conflict occurred in Papua even though victims continued to appear.

In that context, observing the political movements of the elites in Papua and those in Jakarta, whether those who joined in or who were very serious discussing about Papua, became a big question mark as to what this attitude meant. Predictably, if it is about afraid of losing investment that has entered to this Earth of Paradise or fear of losing political momentum. Only that point which can be concluded in general.

In jagapapua.com media records, at least some serious and noteworthy cases of the Indonesian government are a matter of accusations against Mispo Gwijangge who was named as the mastermind of the murder of 17 employees of PT Istaka Karya in December 2018, and allegations of treason against students who took action raising the morning Star flag (Bintang Kejora flag) as a result of a case that began in Surabaya and a conflict of international interest in the giant Freeport gold mine. In these three major cases, Indonesia must take into account Papua’s position in international political conflicts.

The Mispo Gwijangge case has drawn so many pros and cons, as well as Papuan student activists who are accused of treason even though they are voicing injustice in their own land. This is how it is in Freeport, which is full of “guardians” of Papua’s wealth. Many view that assessing if there is no Freeport in Papua, Papua is too fast separated from the Republic of Indonesia, as well as at the oil refinery in Bintuni.

International political facts and by looking at the movement of international human rights observers today, it is very likely that the Indonesian government is suspected of bargaining with the cases that are happening right now.

For example the fate of Mispo Gwijangge who was attached to the article threat of death penalty or life imprisonment, and Papuan students who were accused of treason. Both of these cases are not impossible to be hot balls deliberately “bargained”, to how anyone is able to read the situation. This is a scary phenomenon about Papua.

There are things that the State has forgotten to do to Papua in the context of reconciliation. What is that? The state has not been so keen to place the customs and history of Papua in the dimension of its resolution. The state is still so confident in pursuing a power formal approach, even though the cultural and historical dimensions of Papua are the key to its resolution.

Call it, why talk about the Papuan, Sultanate of Tidore taking part? What happened and why did it happen? This new formation is not seen by the state as the most powerful instrument. Sultan Tidore Husain Syah said, speaking of Papua, the same as speaking Tidore. There is such a strong link and the pattern of problem solving is so significant.

The problem is that the State has not done that. On the other hand, there is a tendency for so many political elites both in the regions and at the center to try to take advantage not only of political matters, but of other benefits that are apparent in the Papua problem. This is also a problem. They think that Papua will be safe, provided their interests are maintained for the existing power.

“Basically, when the state does not bring ordinary people in discussing the Papua problem, it is the same as letting Papua go, and never expect that when many people’s interests in justice are never finished, it is the same as letting extreme groups thrive on this Earth of Paradise” . (*)
